“We know everything, yet nothing at all.”
We live in a strange time, dear readers. There is almost nothing we cannot know.
A question can be answered before we have even finished asking it. Before we have even finished thinking about it on our own.
A photograph can travel across the world in seconds.
We can watch something happen thousands of miles away while we’re all sitting alone in our bedrooms.
We can learn someone’s name, their hometown, their favourite movie, their political beliefs, where they went last weekend, and what they had for breakfast.
But somehow, with all of this information, I wonder if we have ever known less.
We mistake access for understanding.
We see a headline and think we know exactly what happened, or what they were thinking.
“They’re just ignorant,”
“Well, he believed in _____”
We see a person’s post and think we know their life. We hear someone’s opinion and assume we understand the person behind it.
But heed this; Information is not understanding.
Knowing THAT something happened doesn’t tell us WHY it happened. Knowing WHAT someone believes doesn’t tell us WHAT MADE them believe it. Knowing WHAT someone shows the world doesn’t tell us WHAT HAPPENS when the camera is turned off.
And perhaps that’s where things get strange.
We have never had more ways to look at one another, yet we seem to have become remarkably good at looking without curiosity.
We scroll past wars, celebrations, breakups, tragedies, birthdays, arguments, strangers crying, strangers laughing; everything exists beside everything else. A devastating, life changing piece of news can sit between a cooking video and the “hottest fall picks of 2026.”
How are we supposed to comprehend a world that desensitises us to things we SHOULDN’T find normal?
We aren’t. We are accustomed to knowing OF things, rather than TRULY knowing them.
And everyone has something to say now. Everyone can react and comment. Everyone can decide what they think within seconds.
When was the last time you allowed yourself to NOT have an opinion?
When was the last time you were curious about someone or something-, for the sake of understanding THEM, and not for a “gotcha” moment?
We can know everything that happened today and still fail to understand the person sitting next to us.
We can have the entire world in our hands, and still feel completely disconnected from it.
But at some point, you have to stop waiting for your life to become different. You can’t just expect to feel connected again.
No one is coming to drag you out of the habits you’ve built. No perfect morning is going to suddenly make you disciplined. No new year, new month, new relationship, or new city is going to fix what you refuse to confront about everybody.
And that’s a hard thing to admit. Sometimes the problem isn’t that we don’t know what needs to change. We KNOW, but we don’t want to do it.
I get it, it’s hard.
But you cannot keep asking life for something you aren’t willing to make room for.
Make the difficult phone call. Apologize when you owe it to somebody. Walk away when you know something is hurting you. Put yourself aside for two seconds, and learn to listen.
And-, maybe think twice before commenting under someone’s post. You could save a life.
